Seeking wisdom --

Many of us yearn to know the answers to lofty philosophical questions. We embark on our quest early, even as toddlers -- and sometimes, eventually, we gain enough understanding to feel a bit wise. Not everyone has the luxury of that search. For them there are few opportunities and even less joy.

For some, the biggest mission of each day is to combat the feeling that there is no way out, nowhere to turn, no one to help. Trapped in a world where possibilities seem beyond reach, trying to merely survive, there is little energy left for contemplation.

Sometimes there is only a bright pink jacket as a reminder that somewhere out there there is a world where seeking enlightenment is a viable alternative to simply making it through the day. Sometimes a bridge is formed to that world; other times despair holds the role as victor.

Many of us have been touched by the suicide of a friend or loved one. Suicide deaths have risen ten percent in the last decade. Know the signs. Help when you can.

Island eller Orienten ikväll?

Det är lite spännande att Sverige möter Island i en träningslandskamp inför fotbolls-EM ikväll, speciellt som de har tagit över vår gamle förbundskapten. Det är samtidigt lite extra kittlande att få en inbjudan i SL med ett orientaliskt tema, eftersom begreppet orientalism inte är riktigt pk. Uttryck som främre och bortre orienten härstammar ju från en tid då Europa med kolonialistens rätt mätte allt utifrån sitt perspektiv.
Men som Marx sa: Historiens upprepar sig, först som tragedi och sedan som fars.

have avatars. Go Figure! Allalong, I’ve been watching for signs that might interest the good
Professor.Chatbots. Hmmmm. Joseph Weizenbaum’s classic Artificial Intelligence (AI)experiments.
Pathfinding, oh yes, Edsger Dijkstra’s algorithm. And so forth.

The challenge of AI has always been the platform. How muchsoftware and data scaffolding must we build,
before we get to the fun part,creating the AI? Seems to me, we have arrived. The platform, the
scaffolding,everything is being served up to us, misen place. As Pathfinding rolls out grid-wide in
Second Life, and soon tothe opensim metaverse… the engineers have done their job; we have everything
weneed. It is our turn: artists, entrepreneurs, and teachers.

The question now… What future do we want? Entrepreneurs willinvent cash generating AI products. Hidden
knowledge is their power. Artiststoo, O purveyors of beauty with veiled messages, how much we love you,
muses ofour virtual worlds… who rarely turn their inventions inside out, for all tosee. That’s what we
teachers do. Take things apart and turn them inside out forstudents to put back together. In this
knowledge ecosystem, as in RL, teachersintervene in society to empower emerging entrepreneurs, artists,
and teachersto create a better world. We teachers set the low water mark for commonknowledge. By
teaching AI in Virtual Worlds… making AI very accessible to everyoneinterested, we are lifting
Archimedes lever. Profoundly!

AI is fun! In my class, I do a brief lecture with AIdemonstrations… you learn and experience chatbots
and pathfinding and otherpowers, now available with simple scripts. The rest of this class
comprisesself-guided exercises. Building AI.Create a prim. Throw in a chatbot script and a personality
notecard. Throw in apathfinding script. Voila! You’ve built sophisticated AI! It’s really thateasy.

I give you all the scripts and step by step instructions onhow to build AI characters. Pathfinding…
(wandering, pursuing, and patrolling…)Pathfinding with Sensors… Chatbots… Greeter bot… Sound making…
Animations…Walking Controller… I call these scripts AI Beans. Drop an AI Bean in yourcharacter’s Content
tab and it performs AI! Key parameters that you want totweak, are right at the top of each script, and
well documented. Minimal externalrequirements are documented too, such as adding a chatbot personality
or soundfiles.

The crème de la crème skill for building AI characters isanimation. Pathfinding makes your characters
mobile; they move around the grid.Animations is what makes characters walk and physically gesture;
moving arms,legs, elevation, etc. I give you a folder of high quality characters; these aresculptie or
mesh creations, donated to NCI, some with freeware licensing.Through class exercises, I teach you how to
animate these characters (or yourown), in a few easy steps using a marvelous script from Ferd, an epic
SLcreator. Don’t forget the Mono checkbox! No programming needed. Use SL’s primeditor to move your
character’s limbs. Record 3 to 5 positions and you’ve got awalking animated character!

Of course, all of this content is totally free. You canreuse it to teach AI too! New Citizens Inc (NCI)
is a free school. You arewelcome to join us at 2:30pm SLT every Tuesday at NCI Dream Seeker (SLURL
http://tiny.cc/82vyew ). We are seekingqualified instructors to teach this class at additional times. I
also offer anasynchronous, distance learning option. The class materials are selfexplanatory; I give all

VAD ÄR NATURLIGT?

Jag hade under många år en vän som brukade säga ”att det är ju bara naturligt” när han inte tyckte att något han bedömde som positivt behövde förklaras närmare. Jag delade ofta inte alls hans uppfattning om vad som var ”naturligt”.

Finns det någonting som händer naturligt är det väl tidens gång och nedbrytning av alla ojämnheter av tidens tand. Det är knappast en uppbyggande positiv trend.

Det krävs arbete för att motstå denna naturens nedbrytande trend. Fråga vilken bäver som helst om naturen upprätthåller dammen där den satt bo utan att den behöver arbeta för det.

Det är inte så att arbete är ”onaturligt” naturligtvis, men det är energikrävande. Vad betyder det? Energi är ingen substans eller någon särskild form av rörelse, utan mer en balansterm för skillnader i naturen som när de utjämnas kan användas för arbete utan att ett bokföringsfel uppstår.

Hur mycket arbete som utförts kan mätas med hur stor förändring som åstadkommits i ett naturligt skeende i förhållande till hur det skulle sett ut om det lämnats åt sig själv.

Ingenting är helt isolerat naturligtvis. I praktiken kan vi ändå använda begreppet arbete för påverkan ”utifrån” som motverkar ett pågående ”inre” händelseförlopps naturliga utveckling .

I grunden är allt arbete beroende av skillnader mellan olika spontana skeenden i naturen. I de flesta fall påverkar de bara varandra på ett sätt som förstärker deras respektive pågående trend. Men i sällsynta fall förstärks skillnader mot vad som annars skulle varit fallet om de inte direkt påverkat varandra.

Det innebär då att vi i ”bokföringen” kan öppna nya konton för ingående och utgående arbete. Men om inget oförutsett ska kunna hända när man gör denna digitalisering förutsätter det en underliggande kontinuitet. Ett abstrakt energibegrepp fungerar som ett korrelat i den dubbla bokföringen.

De flesta entreprenörer vill gärna se sig som nyskapare och skapare av nya arbetstillfällen. De ser ingen motsättning i detta och att balansräkningen måste nollställas.

De flesta filosofer ser däremot en motsättning i en kontinuitet, innebärande determinism i naturen, och fri vilja att göra något annat än det som ändå skulle ha skett.

De har naturligtvis fel!

Passionstid

Även om vädret mitt i denna årstid för passionerade par i år passar bättre för aktiviteter IRL snarare än i SL och min primatar mest grämer sig för att han inte har råd att vara på plats varken i Monacos formel 1-lopp eller i Paris på Roland Garros så kanske det ändå kan finnas tid att ta en funderare över var ni placerar er själva på en passionsskala mellan 1 och 10 i SL. ush har sitt betyg klart.

A teaser for Liquid Crystals opening June 2nd

Igår kunde man få en förhandsvisning tillsammans med en konsert av Ultraviolet Alter som dessutom komponerat musiken i streamen till Betty Tureaud's nya installation Liquid crystals på Dividni Shostakovich's Split Screen Installation Space. Musiken till det korta bildspelet är inte från Ultras liveframförande utan hämtat från streamen när Betty visade oss runt efter konserten.



Betty says:

"I've always been fascinated by crystals and the way they appear and how we now use them technologically
-- beautiful colors occur in polarized light and in the microscope we see fantastic shapes. They can
receive radio signals and form images on a computer screen.

My first show in SL in 2007 showed crystals of human internal fluids. I made this installation just following my fantasy color world."

Liquid have a chemical structure which exhibits a substance-phase with the characteristics of the
conventional liquid form (liquid) and the solid form (in this case the crystal). For example, the liquid
crystal surface as a liquid, but have many molecules arranged and oriented in the crystal-like state.

There are many different types of liquid crystal phases which are distinguishable by their optical
properties.

Liquid crystals can be classified into thermotropic and lyotropic. Thermotropic liquid crystal display
phase transitions as a function of temperature, whereas the lyotropic liquid crystals exhibit phase
transitions as a function of the concentration of the mesogenic.

Liquid crystals are widely used in LCD-based watches, cell phones, PDAs, TVs and monitors. The advantage
of the liquid crystal optical properties of certain liquid substances crystallize in the presence or
absence of an alternating electric field. In a typical LCD there is a liquid crystal layer (typically 10
micron thick) between two polarization filters which are angled (oriented 90° relative to each other).

It should be noted that many standard liquids in fact are liquid crystals. Soap is, in fact, liquid
crystal, and liquid crystal displays several variant forms depending on their concentration in water.

Don´t panic

Don´t panic står det på handuken (det går att läsa om man klickar upp bilden). Lättare sagt än gjort igår, denna handduksdag, när Kandi nästan lyckades få Apmel att missa kvällens Ultraviolet-konsert (mer om den i ett senare inlägg) med att oskyldigt be honom att testa en sak..
